While Elephant-human conflicts in around Satkosia wildlife sanctuary further escalated to severe stage , the tragic death of two elephants due to electrocution near Jagannathpur village of Angul caused serious concern among people in general and wildlife activists in particular.
Forest department personnel in Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary in Angul district recovered two decomposed elephant carcasses on Tuesday. Preliminary investigation suggests that the elephants died before 4/5 days due to electrocution after coming in contact with high-tension live wire.
Recently 25 people have been died due to elephant menace within last 6 months in and around Satkosia range .
Now the conflict escalated due to failure of the government to have a habitat planning in Mines & industrial rich Angul .
Noted Wildlife Activist , Mr Biswajit Mohanty, pointed out that “coal mining in Angul district is the reason behind the rising human-elephant conflict. The elephants are stressed due to coal and stone quarry mining. With their corridors disturbed, they are running amok. “
Environmentalist & Advocate Mr Prasarna Behera while expressed serious concern over the tragic death of two elephants , blamed the poor wildlife management .
“Unplanned mining & industrialisation activities in Angul district , specially in the peripheral area of Satkosia Sanctuary posed serious threat to elephants & human being . While thousands acre of forest and elephant corridors have been destroyed for mining & industrialisation , now it is impossible for the people as well as elephants to live together in this conflict region. In this context Govt most come forward with a habitat planning for Angul area to keep separate the people, mines & Industries and wildlife “ - told Mr Bijay Mishra , General Secretary, Citizens Action Forum
