SOCIAL ACTIVIST SURYAMANI SWAIN PASSES AWAY

Eminent social activist Suryamani Swain, wife of Late Narasingh Swain, the first Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, passed away on Saturday at the age of  95 .

Mrs. Swain was a distinguished member of the Odisha Social Welfare Board and played a pioneering role in police welfare initiatives in the state. She founded the Police Ladies Club in Odisha and also served as the President of the Odisha Police Welfare Association.

Deeply committed to education and social upliftment, she instituted scholarships at Tulasipur Police High School. She was actively involved in relief work for flood and fire victims and in initiatives for the welfare of slum dwellers. During the 1990s, she worked extensively for women’s empowerment by establishing skill-development units .

Her most significant recent contribution was the sponsorship of several medical students across different medical colleges, enabling them to pursue their medical education. As a member of the Indian Red Cross Society, Bhubaneswar, she also organised several blood donation camps.

Mrs. Swain is survived by two sons and three daughters. All her children and sons-in-law were present during her final rites. She was cremated at Swargadwar, Puri.

With her passing, Odisha has lost a selfless and highly respected social activist, whose lifelong service touched countless lives.
